Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cadet 1st Lt Zachary Weinbaum is now a Navy Midshipman Fourth Class. Recently, he successfully completed five rigorous weeks of NROTC training at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he is majoring in Aeronautical Science. Twenty percent of the candidates did not graduate the intense program which included daily 5:30 am PT, customs and courtesies, Navy and Marine Corps leadership traits and principles, basic knowledge, wearing of the uniform, and drill. In addition there was special swim training and qualification which involved 25 ft. jump, 4 different strokes, deadman's float, and inflating BDUs. Weinbaum was assigned squad leader. He was promoted to Delta Company Commander and credits his CAP leadership experience for why he held that job longer than any other candidates during his NROTC training. Fondly called "Spiderman” by all his fellow Midshipmen, Weinbaum explains, "We were learning leadership traits in a classroom, and when the platoon sergeant asked who said the quote: "Knowledge is power”, and I promptly answered "Spiderman, sir.” Not quite, Sir France Bacon in 1597 said that. Spiderman said, "Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility. ...”

Zachary Weinbaum graduated last May from Olympic Heights Community High School where he was an honor student, member of the swim team and chorus. Zachary joined the Civil Air Patrol's Boca Raton Composite Squadron in 2005. He graduated Southeast Region Cadet Leadership Academy and served as the squadron’s Recruiting Officer 2008-09, Cadet Commander 2009-10, Staff Advisor 2010-11 and Instructor in Charge at Group 6’s Cadet Leadership Academy. In the six years with CAP he was awarded the squadron’s Air Force Outstanding Cadet of the Year Award and is the recipient of both the Bronze and Silver Esprit de Corp Marine Corp Medals. In addition, he was presented the Vietnam Veterans Exceptional Performance in Military Youth Organization, American Legion Americanism and the VFW Outstanding Cadet Officer Awards. Zachary Weinbaum earned his private pilot’s license in 2010 and hopes to be a Marine Fighter Pilot.

The Boca Raton Composite Squadron meets on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Civil Air Patrol building at Boca Raton Airport. For more information about CAP or our Squadron call or email Squadron Commander 1st Lt. Douglas Macdonald at (561)-251-7935 or dbmac1@msn.com..
